Iteration, Constraint, and Visual Experimentation

The Studies collection presents a body of work focused on iteration as a generative method. These paintings foreground experimentation, constraint, and refinement, emphasizing process over resolution. Variation is introduced gradually, allowing material response and perceptual feedback to guide the development of form.

The works reflect a research-oriented approach to making, in which repetition functions as a tool for inquiry rather than replication. Subtle shifts in scale, density, and gesture accumulate across the surface, producing visual structures that emerge through sustained engagement rather than compositional hierarchy.

Situated alongside Montoya’s academic research practice, the Studies collection demonstrates how abstraction can function as an investigative framework—one that values attentiveness, revision, and material behavior as central to visual understanding.
