Patterns Collection
Repetition, Emergence, and Visual Structure
The Patterns collection explores repetition as both a formal strategy and a mode of inquiry. Through iterative mark-making and controlled variation, the paintings investigate how visual structures emerge, destabilize, and reconfigure over time. Rather than functioning as decorative pattern, repetition is used to foreground process, surface interaction, and perceptual rhythm.
Montoya’s approach is informed by sustained observation and an attentiveness to material behavior. Working through abstraction, the paintings emphasize gradual shifts in density, spacing, and tonal modulation, allowing pattern to arise through accumulation rather than predetermined design. This methodology parallels empirical research practices, in which iterative experimentation reveals structure through constraint and variation.
While informed by a scientific background, the work does not illustrate research outcomes. Instead, it operates as an independent visual investigation, inviting prolonged viewing and perceptual engagement. The Patterns collection situates abstraction as a means of examining emergence, order, and instability within material systems.
